The Program can be broadly summarised as follows, though it will be customised according to the specific needs and conditions of each client:

Frequently Asked Questions
How does EMDR therapy relieve the symptoms of emotional and mental distress?
EMDR therapy focuses on resolving the original experience that gives rise to the symptoms of distress.
This is done through the 8-phase structure of EMDR therapy. In an EMDR session, the client briefly recalls the memory while moving their eyes to follow the hand movement of the therapist. The movement stimulates the healing capacity of the brain to reduce the negative emotional, cognitive and physical reactions to the experience. When the memory is fully reprocessed, it is no longer distressing and the symptoms relating to the experience fall away.
By resolving the source that gives rise to the symptom, EMDR therapy goes beyond symptom reduction to deliver results that generally are radical and sustained.
What happens in the Emotional and Mental Wellbeing programme at Acorntherapy?
The programme begins with a thorough assessment — including your personal history, psychological evaluation, and identification of the experiences driving your symptoms. The therapy phase involves building psychological resources, processing distressing memories, and consolidating positive outcomes of the therapy. The programme concludes with discharge preparation, helping you establish a clear, grounded vision for how you think, feel, perform, and relate going forward.
How many EMDR therapy sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies according to the nature and complexity of your concerns, as well as your therapy goals. Some clients experience significant relief within a few sessions, while others benefit from a longer course of therapy. At Acorntherapy, we will discuss with you a personalised therapy plan after the initial assessment. From time to time during the course of therapy, we will review progress with you so you can keep tabs on where you are in your journey.
Is a diagnosis required before I see you?
No diagnosis or a doctor’s referral is necessary to begin EMDR therapy. All you need to do is to get in touch with us. Through history taking and assessment, we will be able to determine whether EMDR therapy is appropriate in your case.
Will my friends and colleagues get to know I am in therapy?
No. All sessions are confidential, except where a client threatens to harm themselves or others, or in the unlikely situation where a court orders disclosure of the therapy. Therefore, your friends, colleagues or any other person will not learn of the therapy, unless you disclose that information yourself, or you consent to its disclosure.
Is EMDR therapy covered by insurance?
Yes if the insurance policy covers psychotherapy. Our clients have successfully claimed from their insurance companies with our receipts. We suggest you first seek your insurer’s confirmation.
